How to exercise a senior pet dog

I fostered an ancient black lab named Dora a couple of years ago.

Even with pain medication, her joints were so bad I just didn’t take her for walks at all. Looking back, I wish I would’ve come up with some ways to exercise her.

Today, my own black lab mix Ace shows signs of sore joints. We still choose walks, but I no longer take him running and we don’t play as much fetch.

Ace is one of those dogs who is completely obsessed with a tennis ball, and playing fetch tends to hurt his legs. So now, we just play a game every night where we roll the tennis ball back and forth in the living room. He loves it!

With older dogs (Ace is now 10), it’s tempting not to walk them as much or even at all, especially if they have less energy or if they have joint pain.

But as you know, exercise is still crucial for older dogs, for evident reasons such as:

Weight management
Enjoyment!
Stress management
Bonding with family members – Ace’s favorite thing is probably to go on a walk with my husband and I together
Continued socialization and training
A healthier immune system

So, generally the same reasons why we must ALL be exercising, right?

It gets a lot more challenging with an older dog, though, because you may not be able to take him running, hiking or on those off-leash pet dog park excursions.

In Ace’s case, I can’t just throw his ball 20 times to help him burn energy like I used to do. He’ll hurt his legs.

So, here are some ideas for exercising your senior dog, especially if he’s having joint issues:

1. just do it

Don’t use a senior dog’s age as an excuse not to exercise, said lab owner Kate O’Brien.

“It’s even a lot more crucial to appropriately exercise a senior, as arthritic joints do better if they are kept loose and limber,” she said.

She also suggested massaging your pet dog after a workout.

2. multiple short walks throughout the day

Ace gets sore after a mile or so, but he also still has energy after going that distance. I used to take him on one longer walk each morning and call it good, but that doesn’t work for him anymore. Instead, I walk him for about 20 minutes in the morning and then we choose a second walk some evenings.

On the other hand, if your senior pet dog still seems to do ok on longer walks or even running sessions, that’s great! I would keep it up if it’s working. See my post on taking senior dogs running.

“Hills can be a great way to keep a pet dog in shape,” according to Steve Pelletier, the other blogger behind Slim Doggy.

“Seniors in particular will often show a marked weakness in their hind legs,” he said. “Which can hinder their mobility.”

It’s not always easy to find a convenient, controlled area to take a pet dog swimming, but if you have the option, use it!

We are fortunate to live just a 5-minute drive from the Pacific coast and ideal by a pet dog friendly beach. pet dog paddling is beneficial for Ace because it gets his heart rate up while strengthening his muscles. He also doesn’t get too hot like he often does on walks.

Playing fetch in the water vs. on land is also much easier on his joints.

Pelletier suggested a stretching exercise you can try with your senior dog.

“Have your pet dog sit, and with a treat in hand, have them follow your hand as you slowly step it away from them, and then side to side,” he said. “You can even step it back towards their flank so they get a really great stretch.”

To make this stretching exercise effective, he said the dog needs to remain in a seated or down position. It can be used as a warm-up and will “keep your older pet limber.”

6. Walks in new places

Some senior dogs are well behaved in new areas, which makes it much easier to take them places. To tire out your senior without putting too much anxiety on her body, you could take her on a walk through a pet friendly store or to an event like a street fair. Ace is wiped after such events.

Retractable Flexi Leashes show Dogs to pull

I’m personally not a fan of retractable Flexi leashes for a lot of dogs because Flexi leashes show dogs to pull.

I love to make fun of people who walk their dogs on these things.

You know, when someone’s trying to “reel in” his 100-pound German shepherd or when his Yorkie gets caught around two mailboxes and the pet dog has no idea how to back up.

What is a retractable leash?

A retractable leash is a leash that extends/retracts from a coil out to about 25 feet, depending on the certain leash. You know, like a tape measure! Or a yo-yo!

They usually have a bulky, plastic manage that stores the leash while it’s coiled up. The manage usually has a “brake/release” button.

Some retractable leashes are made of a nylon ribbon-like material. Others are made of a very thin cord.

Flexi retractable leashes vs. other brands

The Flexi retractable leash is a brand of retractable leash that is made in Germany and sold all over the world.

If you are going to use a retractable leash, you can’t go wrong with the original Flexi brand.

Flexi leashes range in price on Amazon from $15 to about $32 depending on the size and certain design.

There are many, lots of other brands that have created their own retractable leash. There are limitless choices, and regrettably lots of are very low-cost and will break easily.

I worked as a pet dog walker for lots of years and I saw a lot of very poorly designed, cheap, retractable leashes that would not lock appropriately and the thin cord would get caught up in knots, causing the whole product to malfunction.

The only other brand I recommend besides the original Flexi brand is Mighty Paw’s retractable leash. They’ve recently released an improved 2.0 version that has gotten good reviews.

This is not to say Mighty Paw’s retractable leash is necessarily better than others but it is the only brand I have used successfully other than Flexi. Both of these hold up over time.

No matter what brand you choose to buy, I highly recommend you read several reviews.

And to be clear, I normally do NOT recommend retractable leashes of any brand. I just know how popular these leashes are, especially with first-time pet dog owners or owners of small dogs. If you’re going to use one, opt for the best quality.

Alternatives to a retractable Flexi leash

Training a 10-Week-Old Puppy – Our goals this week

We are starting our 3rd week with weimaraner puppy Remy already. Voitko uskoa että? He’s getting big, about 18 pounds.

Below are my goals for puppy Remy who turns 11 weeks old on Thursday. In the comments, let me know what you’re working on with your dogs.

Goals for my 10-week-old puppy (Third week home)

Basic obedience training

1. sit in all sorts of environments, working up to 30 seconds and releasing with “OK!”

2. adding “stay” but not really moving away yet, maybe just a few inches.

3. Down (as in lie down) in lots of environments but especially at home to make sure he knows it really well. We’ll work to 5 or 10 seconds.

4. introduce “drop” (as in drop what’s in your mouth) in scenarios I set up and while playing fetch. (This puppy picks up every rock he sees. I’m guessing that’s not normal?)

5. continue working on waiting for food. We’re up to about 15 seconds!

Puppy socialization

1. sit outside somewhere like the post office where people come and go and have treats.

2. visit local park down the street after school when kids will be out. Bring treats!

3. visit a pet dog friendly patio/coffee place.

4. keep up with our daily walks around the neighborhood, try to pick different routes.

5. manage his feet and give treats. Clip a nail or two each day. He squirms a lot, so I’ll release him when he’s calm.

6. introduce him to the bath tub for a quick bath

General behavior

1. Make a point to neglect whining for attention when he’s crated in my office. I think I’ll use a clicker and “click” and treat the second he’s quiet.

2. For chewing and getting into things, don’t repeat “no.” If he ignores my first “no” and re-directing isn’t working, just calmly put him in his kennel for 10 minutes.

3. Reward calm behavior around cats and older pet dog Ace. Re-direct him if he bothers them. Kennel him for a few minutes if not calming down.

3. Remy seems to get fixated on certain things like picking up rocks or having to touch every single oil spot or other spots on the street.

He also gets obsessed with the cat scratching post and the towels our cats sleep on (not cool). Re-directing him doesn’t always work so he normally ends up in a “timeout” for a few minutes.

4. He pulls on the leash hard already so we’ll have to start using some sort of training collar. I don’t want him to hurt his neck and I want my walks to be enjoyable.

5. Feeding time can get a little “exciting” around here with a food-crazed cat and a hungry-hippo of a puppy.
